Date the Inputs Behind the Constraint Map

A constraint map may be newly formatted and still rely on an obsolete rate. Its usefulness depends on the inputs behind the decision, not the date on the cover.

Give the important inputs a visible basis and a rule for review.

Date the evidence and its scope

For each rate, resource limit or routing assumption that matters, record the source, observation period and operating conditions covered. Name an owner for resolving questions.

Distinguish when the record was retrieved from when the production occurred. A fresh export of an old process is still an old baseline.

Do not assign one expiry period to everything. A layout may remain valid while a product mix, staffing pattern or supplier lead time changes.

Connect changes to conclusions

Identify which recommendation uses each input. If a packaging revision changes handling time, determine which labor plan and capacity scenario depend on that time.

This allows the team to review the affected conclusion without rebuilding every part of the map.

Set triggers around relevant changes: new product families, equipment work, revised crew coverage or a sustained discrepancy between predicted and actual behavior. A calendar review can supplement those triggers.

Represent uncertainty explicitly

Label inputs as observed, estimated, superseded or missing. An approved estimate can be useful when its basis and limitations are visible.

A missing input should not silently inherit an old value. Show which conclusion cannot yet be supported and what evidence would resolve it.

Some preparation may continue while the input is missing. A decision that relies on that evidence remains conditional.

Review the weakest dependency

At the next capacity review, select the recommendation with the largest consequence. Find the input most likely to have changed since it was established.

Check that input first. Its age matters because of the process changes it may have missed, not because every old record is wrong.

A maintained map lets the team say which parts are current, which are provisional and which decision needs another look. That is more useful than a document that appears current merely because someone saved it today.
